So I typed this is a word doc. Took me many quick typing sessions to get what is here. Funny...with three kids at home there isn't much time for the computer! So sorry if it doesn't make sense (running on little sleep)! But here is a little peek into the first few days home!
More later!!
Our first days home
Can't believe I actually have a spare minute to write anything! The first few days home have been a whirlwind. Going to the airport and picking up Berlynn and Coleden was such a great day. My mom, dad, Joe, Dorothy and Danielle and of course Lorelei came with me. It got a little crazy when we thought the escorts had missed the connecting flight but they didn't so they arrived soon after we expected them. But my mom was off trying to find out more about the flights and Danielle was standing with our bags and Lorelei was jumping up and down so Joe was able to get a few photos but we must have looked a little confused!
The escorts arrived and both Berlynn and Cole were in matching Congolese outfits! So cool! They are adorable and will be something great to put in their memory boxes! Both were very happy and came to us right away. Lorelei was so excited. I think she was a little confused at first but she seemed pretty happy. All the children seemed so content! We took some pictures and I got the paperwork and we left! The ride home went really well. We were in the motorhome so they were able to ride on our laps. That made for a nice peaceful drive back to MI. Cole ended up sleeping on the bed with my mom and Dorothy and Berlynn slept on Danielle. I was able to cuddle with Lorelei a bit.
We didn't get home until around 11:30pm. So we got everyone changed and ready for bed. Danielle stayed with me and we got ready for the crazy that may be coming. But the first night was relatively easy. They only woke up like 3 times in the night. We did have three dirty diapers in that time but both fell back to sleep fairly quickly. Only the last time (about 4 am) was it a bit more challenging. Cole wouldn't fall back to sleep for about an hour. Finally I took him in bed with me and everyone slept until 6:30am.
The first full day at home was pretty crazy. Cole went to my mom's house with Lorelei so Danielle, Berlynn and I could go get some adoption things taken care of. Danielle kept Berlynn happy while I went to Probate Court and the Social Security Office. I was able to turn in some paperwork and they sent me home with the rest! Then we came back and honestly I don't remember what we did! It is sort of a blur!! About mid afternoon we went over and met Sam's parents. They were very nice and we got to visit with them for a little bit. The funny part was that Berlynn had fallen asleep and the whole time we were talking and stuff she didn't budge. She slept for about 3 hours without a single peep. Even being passed from person to person and being moved all around. When she is out....she is OUT! We got to talk to Dan and Joanne on skype too. Unfortunately Berlynn was still sleeping and never did wake up the whole time we talked to them. But they got to see her so that was good. Cole was pretty happy for most of it until he got hungry! That evening Dorothy had a recital so Lorelei went with to that. Cole fell asleep early and Berlynn got a little alone time with the grown ups. She LOVED that! We were able to get Berlynn to bed and then Cole woke up and Lorelei and Cole took a bath. He loved splashing and splashing! Then we got them to bed (somehow again...a blur but I think it was a little harder this time) Well that night was rough. Cole was up ALL night long. He didn't sleep for more than an hour or hour and a half stretch. Sometimes only 15 or 20 minutes before waking up again. But Berlynn was a sleeping queen! She slept until 6:30 am and then Danielle gave her a bottle in bed and we all didn't get up until 8 in the morning! Not bad!!
Wednesday Janna and Bill came to visit. Everyone was pretty happy most of the day. We played for a while inside but it was so nice we had to go for a walk. Well it took four adults like 30 minutes to 3 kids ready for a walk! There was some crying and diaper changes and attempts to find a snowsuit that would fit Cole! Sadly in the end the only one that would work was pink...sorry buddy! Well we got him and Lorelei in the stroller and Berlynn in the moby wrap and we took off! Everyone liked the walk and it was so good to get them out of the house! My parents went to my book conference for me so Wednesday night was my first night “alone”. Well not completely because Joe came over after youth group. But it was just me and the three kids for the evening. Everything went pretty well but it really hit me...I have THREE kids and TWO arms! Why didn't God give us more arms???
My parents got home on Sunday. Thursday thru Sat were a little overwhelming. Since I am a "temporary single mom" all those night wakings are my job...bottles...diapers! Can't wait to have a husband again! But I have had SOOO much help! Couldn't ask for better family! My mom comes over at night and helps me put everyone to bed (since the bedtime hour seems to be melt down hour!) which allows me to get to bed sooner too. I can't believe I actually go to bed at 10 pm some nights! sadly that doesn't mean more sleep. Cole seems to wake up almost every hour sometimes multiple times each hour. I am lucky to get a solid hour of sleep at a time! But I sneak in a nap when Mema has everyone! I know that will work itself out soon! We are still adjusting.
I just can't believe how quickly they seem to be "fitting" in and attaching! Berlynn is especially attached to her momma (can't complain about that)! But all of them do really well with other people too. Sometimes they just take a bit to warm up. But as they feel more and more secure, that may change too.
Well Berlynn is crawling on my lap and hitting buttons. I have to delete more than I am typing...haha! So this is it for now.
We are so grateful everyday to God for giving us three beautiful happy healthy kids! No amount of sleep (or lack of it) means more than the greatest gift....being a mom! After a year of waiting it is so exciting to have them finally here!
